Holy Ghost Revival on Azusa Street: The True Believers Part II: More Eyewitness Accounts

The BEST
Not only is this the best book I've read on the Azusa outpouring but the best author. Dr. Larry Martin has done an excellent job of presenting his material so you feel like you're living in that time period. I highly recommend this book or any of his other writing to anyone that wants to know more about Pentecost at the turn of the century.

Another Wonderful Book by Larry Martin
This sequel to the first "True Believers" is also a collection of first hand testimonials from people who received the Pentecostal experience at Azusa. It is very moving to read in their own words how these men and women received their supernatural touch from God and went all over the world carrying the message of the Gospel and the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Simply put, this is an awesome book!

The Life and Ministry of William J. Seymour: And a History of the Azusa Street Revival

Everybody Needs To Know About William J. Seymour
Bishop Seymour, a humble son of slaves, is one of the people most mightly used by God in Christian history. Larry Martin tells his story with skill and with passion. This book is powerful. From Azusa the Pentecostal revival, led by Bishop Seymour has spread to 500 million people.

What were Seymour's secrets. Humility, passion, holiness, love for people across racial lines.

Larry Martin begins with Seymour's birth and childhood and vividly protrays his treatment as a black person. Yet Seymour rose beyond racial cruelty and hate--and embraced and spread the unconditional love of God. See for yourself. You've got to read this book.

From Glenn Gohr -- Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center
Having read through this manuscript when in its formative stages, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is researching the Pentecostal Movement or the Azusa Street Revival of Los Angeles that began in the spring of 1906. It is also a good sourcebook for those interested in Black History as William Seymour figures prominently among African-Americans of the 20th Century. Larry Martin has done an excellent job in ferreting out little known facts about William J. Seymour, the leader of the Azusa Street Revival. He has also uncovered information regarding Seymour's family and his early life in Louisiana and other places he traveled before arriving in Los Angeles in 1906. Some of the background information he gives regarding everyday life in Southern Louisiana and in Los Angeles near the turn of the century are essential to the understanding of William J. Seymour and the role he played in the Black Community and in the beginnings of the Pentecostal movement. Having contacted a number of different religious and local archives, looking through old newspapers, census records, city directories, and the like, Dr. Martin has a clear understanding of who William J. Seymour was. This is the most complete biography of William J. Seymour which has been written to date. When combined with his reflections and documentation of the famed Azusa Street Revival, this makes an excellent backdrop for understanding the Pentecostal movement and current revivalism around the globe.

Great Sermons of Azusa Street
This book which contains sermons preached by the late Bishop William J. Seymour should be read by every Christian, Saved, Sanctified and/or religious person. Bishop Seymour takes us back to the old time way, that the bible speaks about, " Ask for the old path ". What Bishop Seymour is preaching about is not just a beleif, but it is a way of Life according to the bible. He speaks of The Baptism of the Holy Ghost and how to recieve it, first getting rid of sin, then by tarring on the altar, seeking to be filled, not someone teaching you how to speak in tongues. I even appreciate that fact that he expounds on the fact that not everyone speaks in tongues, that it is a gift to some not all. The Bishop also preaches about being the husband of one wife and the wife having one husband. Many find this controversial in this day, but it is written in the bible, and Bishop Seymour breaks it down scripture by scripture so, that there would be no mistake about what God has ordained.

This book is a must for those who want the true word of God, not false doctrines. If you want to know Christ and his ways of righteousness, I highly recommend this book.

Simple Truths / Amazing Impact
Here are some of the actual sermons preached by Bishop William Seymour at the Azusa Street Revival in 1906. This revival introduced pentecostalism to the world and changed the religious landscape forever. Read for yourself the simple truths that changed the world.

Welcome review of What Happened in Charismatic Movement
I would reccomend this book to anyone in search of the truth. I believe that all accounts of miracles are accurate and a witness to the workings of the Holy Spirit in Contemporary times.

The book shows the struggle of many Christians to achieve a walk with God and although I reccomend it highly, as by it contents shows the need for an individual receiving the Holy Spirit in order to be led in perfect truth. Like any book, it's interpretation should be by the Holy Spirit, but the witness to that is firm.

I would reccomend it to any level of Christin who is opening himself to the truth and to skeptics who want direction in how to learn the truth.

The Holy Spirit has blessed me in my second reading of it, as much as I think He blessed me on the first.

To The publishers, I would say reprint and spread, God always blesses a pure heart with true seed.

Follow a man as long as God tells you, for a time comes to follow God Himself. We need the Holy Spirit, for Jesus Christ is Lord and The Holy Spirit is His Gift to hearts that turn to Him from the devices of man.

God truly blessed me in my reading, and in my opinion, I can see very little reason for Him not blessing anyone else.

A Window on The Beginning of Pentecostalism
What a great experience to be there at Azusa Street in Los Angeles in 1906-1912. Hear through the words of those who received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at Azusa. It is awesome what God did in the lives of these men and women. I was greatly moved as I read and I pray "Do it again Lord! And do it in me." If you want to be touched by God, this book will do that for you.

Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home

One of the Best Books Today on Prayer
There are a myriad of books available today on prayer. Many of those books are shallow theologically and draw little if any from the rich heritage of the Church. Foster's volume combines a knowledge of church history's classic devotional writers with a freshness appealing to the 21st century.

Foster describes various forms of prayer, dividing them into three general categories: inward-focused prayer provides us with personal transformation, upward-focused prayer offers us intimacy with God, outward-focused prayer places us in the ministries that God would have us fill.

Don't let the title fool you. This volume is NOT just another book on what some persons may call "prayer lite." Foster presents a solid work that is grounded in the theology as well as the history of the Church. I recommend this book highly to all persons desiring a serious treatment of prayer.

An Excellent Guide to a Life of Prayer
This book is an excellent introduction to, and survey of, the practice and experience of prayer for Christians. Richard Foster draws from many different traditions and experiences and distills them into this very fine and accessible work. It's very practical, unpretentious and inspiring. Foster helps us examine the many facets of prayer grouped according to three intentions on personal transformation, intimacy with God and ministry to others. Among its 21 chapters you may find aspects of prayer that are very familiar to you (maybe you had never thought of them as prayer before) along with encouragement to focus and deepen your efforts in those areas. Other types of prayer may be completely foreign to you but offer an invitation to explore. For those who want to take prayer more seriously this book is a very good place to begin. It is not an introduction in the sense of being superficial or shallow. It treats each aspect of prayer in enough depth to get the willing reader well on his or her way to a more effective and vital life of prayer. But it also shows us prayer as a vast, life long and life changing endeavor and points to the work of others who have explored the various disciplines of prayer more deeply. This books is essential reading.

Deeply challenging and rewarding book on prayer.
There are a myriad of books on the subject of prayer. Many are guides to prayer, also called "how-to" books on prayer. Others are compilations of prayers in scripture (such as the prayers of Jesus or the prayers of David). Many Christian readers may have one or more of these on their bookshelves. However, when one reads PRAYER: FINDING THE HEART'S TRUE HOME, there is an immediately discernable difference present within it's pages. As you move through the book you can sense a depth of wisdom and intimacy with God present in author's life. The book is so profound that is is difficult to read more a few pages in one sitting. This isn't to say that all of the concepts taught within are difficult, although a few are. Rather, it is that the depth and meaningfulness of the pages are so intense that it takes the thoughful reader much time to digest, wrestle with, and assimilate the beautiful wisdom within them.

A highly recommended and deeply challenging help and inspiration.

Azusa Street

Really good
im 17 and had to write a paper on the lines of revival and this book is awesome. You can hardly put it down once u start reading it. I encourage ppl to get this.

The Adventures, Trials, and Opinions of Frank Bartleman
When I sat down to read "Azusa Street" I expected extensive accounts of the Azusa Street revival meetings of 1906-1909. To my surprise, information about Azusa was not the focus of the book. It could have better been titled "The Adventures, Trials, and Opinions of Frank Bartleman." The book is essentially a journal of Bartleman's experiences in the early Pentecostal movement from 1904 to 1910, inclusive of his involvement in the Azusa Street Mission. Vinson Synan's introduction is informative and helpful in setting a framework for the rest of the book.

The book is an opportunity to view the life and mindset of this early 20th Century Pentecostal preacher. His life was not easy but it was greatly dependent upon God. Bartleman is a fascinating character. He is extremely opinionated, often critical and fanatical in his stands. At the same time his passion for the ministry, his simple yet unwavering faith, and his deep hunger for God are inspiring. I was moved by the sacrifice paid by this forerunner and challenged by his teaching on "death to the self-life." I recommend "Azusa Street" to those desiring a look inside early Pentecostalism.

A brand new view
This book really gives you a new look at revival. We usually think of big tents and lots of "healing", whether true or not. But this really opened my eyes to the way the Lord moves and just how powerful He can really be. It also shows the true power of prayer, fasting and just giving the Holy Spirit liberty to move. Even if you feel you don't know the Lord well enough for anything like this to happen in your life, this book will HELP you with that! It's a true story but reads like an action adventure. If you like reading the Left Behind series, or even just the Bible, you will TOTALLY love this book, and it's a great one to give as a gift ANYTIME!

The Laughing Revival from Azusa to Pensacola
Published in Paperback by Way of Life Literature (June, 1998)
Author: David W. Cloud
Average review score:

Cloud is a cult member
If you want the straight dope on the Laughing Revival, read "Counterfeit Revival." Don't read anything by David Cloud.

Here's the dope on Cloud:

Cloud is a failed Baptist minister who now writes for a cult group that insists that evangelical Christians are really Liberals in league with the Vatican to usher in the reign of the Anti-Christ. The King James Bible, in Cloud's view, supersedes the original Greek and Hebrew scriptures. Cloud says that evangelical Christians are "apostate" because they feed the poor and take care of the sick - things that a "true Christian" would never do, since a "true Christian" would be too busy ranting and raving about the KJV. According to Cloud, the only true Christians are independent Bible Baptists who read only the KJV AND who only follow David Cloud. (If you follow another KJV-Onlyist, like Peter Ruckman, then you're no good, either, because only David W. Cloud is chosen by God to lead the KJV movement.)

If you want to read what some self-published nutcase has to say about Pentecostalism, this book's for you.

Excellent
David Cloud is a very studious preacher. Though many people make numerous libelous (false) statments regarding Cloud, they only do so out of bigotry and ignorance. In this book, Cloud shows the truth concerning the laughing "revivals." The only reason someone would reject the truth is because they are espoused to their religious circle, and therefore bow their knee to every dictate of their religious leader.

Good book-- Bad Review
This is a good, well-resaerched book. It's a good investment.

Mainly, though, I want to say that whoever wrote the negative review below is truly guilty of lying in about 5 specific cases. I don't even say this to defend Cloud. It's just that Cloud's real views are quite public (he has an enormous website) and it can be easily proven that, again, at least five of these accusations (by the Michigan reviewer below) are patently false.

That person should be ashamed if he is a Christian, but I am afraid there won't be any remorse.

Anyway, what I am saying is true. Check it out for yourself.

Azusa Street Revival
Published in Paperback by Whitaker House (November, 1996)
Author: Clara Davis

disappointing
This I'm afraid is not a very helpful book. By it's title, I assumed it would provide a historical testimony to goings-on at Azusa Street at the beginning of the 20th Century. But in fact it gives little historical insight that is of any real help; instead the author tries to give instructions and encouragements to her readers, much of which I find unhelpful, even patronising. The style of wriiting, too, leaves much to be desired. I do not recommend it.
